Free Crochet Lace Egg Basket Pattern

Evelyn writes: "Cylinda, Just thought I'd show you what I did with the Easter Egg Holders. I hung them on a small lit up Christmas tree. I reall enjoyed making these quick and easy holders. Thanks for all your good work in creating the patterns."

Free Lace Egg Basket

Materials:
Sm ball 100% cotton thread, size 10 (any color)
Steel crochet hook size 8 USA (1.50 mm)

Finishing Materials:
Glue gun/glue
Two small flowers

Finished Size: Fits a lg plastic egg
Gauge: Not important to over all size

Skill Level: Easy

Speical Stitches:
Beg shell: (ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated st.

Shell: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in indicated st.

Instructions:

Rnd 1) Ch 5; (17 trc) in 5th ch from hook (first 4 chs skipped count as first trc); join with a sl st to first trc: 18 trc.

Rnd 2) Ch 4 (counts as first trc), trc in joining; * (2 trc) in next trc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first trc (top of first ch 4): 36 trc.

Rnd 3) Ch 1, sc in joining; * ch 5, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * around ending with a ch 2, dc in first sc forming last sp on rnd: 12 ch 5-sps.

Rnds 4-7) Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sp (faux picot made); * ch 5, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch 5 sp (picot made); rep from * around ending with a ch 2, dc in first sc forming last sp on rnd: 12 ch 5-sps/12 faux picots.

Rnd 8) Beg shell in same sp see special sts;; * shell in 3rd ch of next ch 5 sp (center ch) see special sts; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc of first shell: 12 shells.

Row 1) Working handle: Sl st in shell sp; beg shell in same sp: 1 shell.

Rows 2-20) Ch 5, turn work; shell in shell sp: 1 shell.

Row 21) Ch 5, turn work; (2 dc) in shell sp, ch 1, sk next 5 shells on last rnd of basket (rnd 8), sl st in next shell sp, ch 1, (2 dc) in shell sp on handle: handle joined. Fasten off; secure ends.

Finishing:

Glue flowers to each side of handle.

Options:

Create several egg baskets using various colors and hang from a branch (sm tree-like branch) decorated with ribbon. Fill plastic eggs with real Easter eggs or place scripture inside each plastic egg for each child (ideally suited for a Sunday School class).

If preferred, these baskets can be stiffened and shaped. Cover a flat work surface such as a styrofoam board or cardboard, even ironing board. Dip crochet in desired stiffening agent and squeeze out excess liquid. Place on prepared work surface and pin bottom (first and second rnds) to surface using rust proof pins. Insert a balloon inside the cavity of the basket and blow until it fills the cavity and straighten the handle over the top of the balloon (balloon opening should be angled away from the top). Tie off balloon and let dry. Once dried, pop the balloon with a pin and release air slowly. Pull from the cavity and decorate the edge of the basket as desired. By pinning the first 2 rnds to the work surface, it'll create a flat area for the egg to sit upright. Fill with plastic grass and jelly beans!
