Snowflake: (Using thread)

Ch 24; join with a sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1) Ch 1; (24 sc) in in ring; join with a sl st in first sc: 24 sc.

Rnd 2) Ch 1, sc in joining, ch 5, sk next sc; * sc in next sc, ch 5, sk next sc; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 12 ch 5-sps.

Rnd 3) Sl st in next ch 5 sp; (ch 3, dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in same sp; * (2 dc, ch 5, 2 dc) in next ch 5 sp; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc (3rd ch of beg ch 3):48 dc/12 ch 5-sps.

Rnd 4) Sl st in next ch 5 sp; (ch 3, dc, ch 3, sc, ch 9, sc, ch 9, sc in 5th ch from hook, ch 5, sc, ch 9, sc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp, (2 dc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch 5 sp; * (2 dc, ch 3, sc, ch 9, sc, ch 9, sc in 5th ch from hook, ch 5, sc, ch 9, sc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch 5 sp, (2 dc, ch 3, sc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch 5 sp; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 18 ch 9-sps/24 ch 3-sps/48 dc. Fasten off; secure ends.

Ornament or Gift Card Holder: (Using yarn) (Make 2 - optional)

Row 1) Ch 4; (11 dc) in 4th ch from hook (first 3 chs skipped count as first dc); join with a sl st to first dc: 12 dc.

Row 2) Ch 3, dc in joining; * (2 dc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 24 dc.

Row 3) Ch 3, (2 dc) in next dc; * dc in next dc, (2 dc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 36 dc. Depending on which project you're making you may or may not fasten off and secure ends.

Creating a gift card holder or ball-snowflake ornament: (Using yarn)

For ornament or after working second piece for gift card holder in which case you'd hold the first piece next to the second piece (WS together) and work through both thicknesses two-thirds around leaving an opening for inserting a gift card; ch 1, sc in joining, (ch 1, sc in next dc) twice, ch 1, holding snowflake close to work, sc in any 1st ch 9 sp on snowflake and in next dc on gift card holder, ch 1, sc in next dc on gift card holder, ch 1, sc in last ch 9 sp on same point of snowflake and in next dc on gift card holder (center ch 9 sp will be pulled to the outside and extend beyond holder), ch 1; * (sc in next dc on gift card holder, ch 1) 3 times, sc in first ch 9 sp on next point of snowflake and in next dc on gift card holder, ch 1, sc in next dc on gift card holder, ch 1, sc in last ch 9 sp on same point of snowflake and in next dc on gift card holder, ch 1; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 6 points of snowflake joined/36 sc/36 ch 1-sps. Fasten off; secure ends.

Finishing Options:

1: Work just the yarn ball for an ornament or for a coaster.
2: Work just the yarn ball gift card holder plain, without the snowflake.
3: Work just the yarn ball with snowflake for an ornament or coaster (shown).
4: Work the gift card holder with snowflake for holding a gift card.
5: Work just the snowflake for an ornament.
6: Work the snowflake and place over an existing ball ornament and glue the points in place with pearls, beads, or flowers.
