Mitten:

Starting at bottom: ch 48; join with a sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1) Ch 3 (counts as first dc), (4 dc) in joining, sk next 2 ch, sc in next ch, sk next 2 ch; * (5 dc) in next ch, sk next 2 ch, sc in next ch, sk next 2 ch; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first dc: 8 fans (5 dc groups).

Rnd 2) Sl st in next 2 dc; ch 1, sc in same st, (5 dc) in next sc; * sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc (center dc), (5 dc) in next sc; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 8 fans (5 dc groups).

Rnd 3) Ch 3, (4 dc) in joining, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc (center dc); * (5 dc) in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc (center dc); rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 8 fans (5 dc groups).

Rnds 4-11) Rep rnds 2 & 3.

Rnd 19) Ch 1, hdc in joining, hdc in next st, sc in next 3 sts; * hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts; rep from * around; hdc in last st; join with a sl st to first hdc: 36 sts.

Rnd 20) Ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts see special sts; * dc in next 4 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 30 dc.

Rnd 1) Join thread to first unworked center dc of fan on rnd 11 with a sl st; ch 1, sc in joining, (5 dc) in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc (center dc), (5 dc) in next sc, (working over mitten portion), sk next dc of fan, sc in next dc, sc over dc post of next fan (this will eliminate any larger holes); join with a sl st in first sc: 2 fans (5 dc groups).

Rnd 2) Ch 3, (4 dc) in joining, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc (center dc), (5 dc) in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc (center dc); join with a sl st to first dc: 2 fans (5 dc groups).

Rnd 3) Sl st in next 2 dc; ch 1, sc in same st, (5 dc) in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc (center) dc, (5 dc) in next sc; join with a sl st in first sc: 2 fans (5 dc groups).

Rnd 4) Ch 1, hdc in joining, hdc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in last st; join with a sl st to first hdc: 12 sts.

Rnd 5) Ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts, dc in next 4 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts; join with a sl st to first dc: 10 dc.

Rnd 6) Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, dc dec over next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, dc dec over last 2 sts; join with a sl st to first dc: 8 dc. Fasten off leaving a 6" tail for sewing thumb opening closed.

Finishing: Thread tapestry needle with tail from mitten opening and sew closed. Repeat instructions for sewing thumb opening closed.

Bottom Edging and Hanger:

Rnd 1) Join thread with a sl st to beg ch opposite the sc that aligns with thumb edge of mitten; ch 1, sc in joining, ch 10, sc in same st, sk next 2 ch, (5 dc) in next ch (opposite fan worked in rnd 1); * sk next 2 ch, sc in next ch (opposite sc worked in rnd 1), sk next 2 ch, (5 dc) in next ch (opposite fan worked in rnd 1); rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 8 fans (5 dc groups). Fasten off; secure ends.
