Festive Candle

Materials:

  • 1 Skein Caron Christmas Glitter (green)
  • Sm amt Caron Christmas Glitter (white w/ silver)
  • Sm amt 4-ply WW yarn (white )
  • Crochet hook size F or G

    Finishing Materials:

  • Empty oatmeal box
  • Battery operated candle (Lampson & Session) - Carlon; purchased at Linens 'N Things or AC Moore

    Finished Size: 7 1/4" T x 7" dia
    Gauge: 2 rows = 1"

    Skill Level: Intermediate

    Special Stitches:
    Fpdc: yo, insert hook from the front of indicated dc post to the back, around the post and back to the front, draw up a lp, (yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) twice to complete the st.

    Prepare the box: Remove lid from oatmeal box and cut approximately 1/2" off from the top portion of the oatmeal box. From the lid, cut a 1" dia circle from the center.

    Candle:

    Starting at top: using Caron glitter in white, ch 18; join with a sl st in first ch to form a ring, being careful not to twist ch.

    Rnd 1) Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in joining; * (2 dc) in next ch; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc (3rd ch of beg ch 3): 36 dc.

    Rnd 2) Ch 3, dc in next dc, (2 dc) in next dc; * dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 48 dc. Fasten off; secure ends.

    Rnd 3) Starting down side: (working in back lps only this rnd); join green yarn to joining with a sl st; ch 3; * dc in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 48 dc.

    Rnds 4-12) Ch 3; * dc in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 48 dc. Fasten off; secure ends on last rnd.

    Rnd 13) Starting "holder:" join WW white yarn to joining with a sl st; ch 3; * dc in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 48 dc.

    Rnd 14) Sl st around dc post below; ch 3; * fpdc over next dc post see special sts; rep from * around; join with a sl st to top of ch 3: 48 post sts.

    Rnd 15) Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc) in next dc; * dc in next 3 dc, (2 dc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 60 dc.

    Rnd 16) Ch 1, sc in joining; * sc in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 60 sc. Fasten off; secure ends.

    Rnd 17) Holding candle upright, join WW white yarn to dc post on rnd 13 (first row of white) with a sl st; ch 1, sc around dc post; * sc around next dc post; rep from * around; join with a sl st in first sc: 48 sc. (This rnd creates the slight edge or bump you see in the photo).

    Finishing:

    Insert batteries in candle and place candle inside the oatmeal box. If you prefer, you might use some materials to stablize the candle such as styrofoam. Replace oatmeal box lid, inserting the candle "flame" through the center opening. Place crocheted cover over the oatmeal box, inserting the candle "flame" once again through the center opening at the top of the candle.

    To use: The cover will need to be removed and replaced as the candle is turned on for usage.

    Never use a real candle with this project!
