Materials:
Small ball 100% cotton thread (size 10)
Steel crochet hook, size 8 USA (1.50 mm)

Finishing materials:
1/3 yard flat lace
1/4 yard ( 1/8" wide) ribbon
2 small flowers (sunflowers or daisies)
Glue

Molding materials:
Commercial fabric stiffener
Plastic wrap
Ironing board, styrofoam base or cardboard base
Rust proof pins
1 1/2" styrofoam ball, cut in half

Finished Size: approx. 3 1/2" in diameter
Gauge: 2 rows = 1/2"/ 6 dc = 1/2"

Crown:
Ch 4; join with a slip st in first chain to form a ring.

Rnd 1) Ch 3, (counts as first dc, now and throughout), 11 dc in ring; join with a slip st to first dc: 12 dc.

Rnd 2) Ch 3, dc in same st; * 2 dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st to first dc: 24 dc.

Rnd 3) Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next dc; * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st to first dc: 36 dc.

Rnd 4) Ch 3; * dc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st to first dc.

Rnd 5) Ch 1, sc in same st; * sc in next dc; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc.

Brim:
Rnd 6) Ch 3, 2 dc in same st; * skip 2 sts, ch 2, 3 dc in next st; repeat from * around; join with a slip st to first dc: 12 groups.

Rnd 7) Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, ch 2; * skip next space, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, ch 2; repeat from * around; join with a slip st to first dc.

Rnd 8) Ch 3, (2 dc in next dc) twice, dc in next dc, ch 4; * dc in next dc, (2 dc in next dc) twice, dc in next dc, ch 4; repeat from * around; join with a slip st to first dc.

Rnd 9) Slip st in next dc, ch 2, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next dc, slip st in next dc, 3 sc in next space; * slip st in next 2 dc, ch 2, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next dc, slip st in next dc, 3 sc in next space; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in base of first st. Fasten off, secure ends.

Finishing:
Cover preferred work surface and styrofoam ball half with plastic wrap. Dip hat in stiffening solution and gently squeeze out excess being careful not to twist or wring the piece. Place over prepared styrofoam ball half and straighten the design. Pin in place and let dry thoroughly. After hat has dried, remove from mold and decorate with lace, ribbon, and flowers as shown in photo.
