Hi! I’m glad you stopped by and hope you enjoy the free crochet patterns on my blog as well as other postings that are part of my life.
To be honest, I’ve read so many “about me” pages I’m dizzy. It’s the hardest thing to write about – yourself. My name is Cylinda and I’m the founder, owner, and designer of Crochet Memories which was founded in January of 1997. That’s a long time for an internet presence!
A bit of background. My name is the culmination of three different names my dad liked and “put together.” Funny thing is, my mom either deliberately or unintentionally didn’t hear the name correctly. I have to thank her for small wonders. Otherwise my name would have been Cylindra. Can you imagine?!?! It was supposed to be the names, Cynthia, Linda, and Sandra. Hence Cylindra and mom, bless her heart, heard Cylinda which is on the birth certificate. So there’s a little bit of meaningless trivia that will have you chuckling or at the very least, raising your brows.
I first learned to crochet in 1977/78. I was already married and had a family by then and living in Hawaii in base housing (military housing). My neighbors sparked an interest in learning to crochet but it wasn’t until Christmas, while hubby was deployed, that I returned home for the holidays and learned to crochet from my mom.
But I’m left-handed, mom’s right-handed and I ended up learning to crochet right-handed. Still do! They say that left-handed people use the “right” side of their brain. So I’m to deduce that being born under the sign of Libra and being left-handed makes me well balanced… however according to statistics, right-handed people live longer. I guess I’m trying to even those odds. 😉
Having previously enjoyed many other needle arts, I discovered my calling with crochet and almost everything else was forgotten. At least put on the back burner. I love vintage style patterns and love the look of lace – its refinement, its delicacy and charm. Nothing pleases me more that to see a frilly doily on a table, or a decorative hat tossed on a corner of the bed or tree stand. Angels poised over the top of a Christmas tree or a lacy basket filled with fancy hand towels.
Yes, I love vintage so it was only natural to start designing them since these type of patterns were hard to find. Also during that time, granny squares were predominant and you could find most anything you wanted in crochet – as long as it was granny squares!
My personal and business goal is to bring customers the enjoyment of working patterns they receive. Following a pattern shouldn’t be exasperating or annoying, but sheer pleasure. And I hope they not only enjoy the process of stitching them, but enjoy the finished piece for years to come. I’d say if I’ve done my homework correctly, they’ll enjoy hours of stitching and decades of enjoying the finished piece. In today’s world where fad coffee trends cost around $4 or more and is gone in a few minutes, having something that provides hours to make and decades to enjoy, is pretty spectacular!
I’m married to my high school sweetheart, Ron, since 1971. We have two grown children together and three grandchildren. We live in Southern California and share our home with our two adopted rescue fur babies!
Other interests I’m passionate about are herb gardening, reading, cooking, working jigsaw puzzles and other needle crafts. I’m a Christian, accepted Jesus as my personal savior when I was in junior high school and then finally baptized in 1976 while living in Hawaii.
