Despite the fact the weather turned hot and muggy in So CA, we decided since we had to take our trailer in to get the led lights replaced due to a recall, we might as well take it out and enjoy a couple days of camping.
On our first night at Lake Skinner, the good Lord treated us to a spectacular night of fireworks as lightening streaked the sky lighting up our trailer. It took us by surprise but it was exciting and we enjoyed the show!
The next morning we woke to sunshine though it was still muggy. We enjoyed breakfast outside overlooking the park with lovely views of the hills and mountains. Mornings are always so picturesque as the sun creates a masterpiece with sunlight bouncing off the peaks and creating shadows in the crevices. What made the landscape striking though was the combination of both the shadows, highlights, and scattered clouds that filled the horizon.
Later we headed to Old Town visiting Villa Di Calabro Winery which is a quaint family owned business. They run their tasting room out of a converted house that’s tastefully decorated and you feel like you’re home the minute you walk in. The owners are always friendly and ready with a quick smile. What I enjoy about this winery is they also sell wonderful and fragrant olive oils and vinegars they make. To truly make the experience memorable, bring a picnic and enjoy the backyard gardens with plenty of foliage and a lovely water feature. They’ll even serve up a chilled bottle of wine to go with your picnic and the place is dog friendly. Charley enjoyed going there…
From there we picnicked on the patio at Wien’s winery conveniently located in the hubbub of wine country here in Temecula. We put together some tortilla wraps with chips and fresh grapes that morning to enjoy while doing a tasting. Yum!
Here’s the recipe – of sorts!
Ham & Cheese Tortilla Wraps
- 1 Tortilla (flour)
- 2-3 deli ham slices (shaved)
- 2 Swiss cheese slices
- 2 Tbsps (or more) Whipped cream cheese
- 1/4 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
Spread the whipped cream cheese on one side of tortilla, top with ham, cheese and lettuce. Fold the edge and bottom up over the filling then continue to roll the tortilla and enjoy!
One can deviate from this basic as much, or as little, as desired. Any meat and cheese combo with mayo or mustard work equally as well and even your favorite lettuce! Or try spreading herb cream cheese on your tortilla!
Back at camp the weather had turned dark, muggy and even hotter which eventually gave way to a downpour with heavy winds. We were not bothered though as we enjoyed the afternoon watching movies on DVD; Passengers and Ghost Protocol while we relaxed letting the rain refresh our souls.
We missed Charley but only time will heal. All in all though, not bad for a couple of days away from home…
